"Shared Genes" is a father/son instrumental acoustic guitar duo inspired by, among others, the world famous British New Age/Jazz group "Acoustic Alchemy," who appear annually in Rochester at Milestones. As you can see from our play list, much of our other inspiration comes from The Beatles, The Ventures and several other classic rock groups.
Our goal is to play important tunes from a variety of musical periods while utilizing acoustic guitars in our interpretation. We do not sing, so our instrumental songs are more intricate to make up for the lack of vocal harmony. We arrange our versions of these classic songs in such a way that they can be played with just two guitars, but still take on a totally new flavor while retaining the familiar qualities of the original tune. Our play list includes compositions by Acoustic Alchemy, America, The Beatles, The Bangles, The Byrds, Glen Campbell, Eric Clapton, John Denver, The Eagles, FireFall, Glen Miller, Carl Perkins, Santana, Simon and Garfunkel and the Ventures. That's quite a range!
While this is unique in itself, it is also worth mentioning that the youngest member of the group, Ted, is only fourteen years old and is able to play over 100 complete songs from memory while also providing the primary lead guitar. For example, he plays the George Harrison lead guitar sections for songs such as Something, And I Love Her, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps, etc. In addition, he does the complete main section of "Here Comes The Sun" which I like to refer to as "Here Comes The Son". And who else do you know who plays acoustic versions of California surf songs by the Ventures!?
